The first GOTO Night is a fact! With Erik Meijer and Timan Rebel!

Yes! It’s time for the first GOTO Night in the run toward our highly valued event GOTO Amsterdam 2013. We have been able to attract great names for this evening for which we are very proud. Every year we organize the GOTO Amsterdam event and in 2013 we are happy to announce the third GOTO Amsterdam edition. To give an idea on this event, we are eager on organizing GOTO Nights and we already had several in the previous years. At the previous GOTO Nights we welcomed Shay Banon (Founder of Elasticsearch), Kresten Krab, Karl Krukow, Michael Franken, Jim Webber and many others.

Erik Meijer

On the already legendary date 12-12-12, Erik Meijer will share his ideas in his talk ‘Open Sytems – Actors and Cloud’. In this talk he will discuss the evolution from the pre-cloud era to an era where highly available stateful actors use a programming model for the outside of the cloud while still allowing for the traditional programming models on the inside. Erik is a speaker who is much known in the developer spheres. His strength is that he takes difficult problems and he shows how these can be addresses through simple and elegant solutions.  In his talks Erik always shows a lot of enthusiasm, he knows how to make it entertaining and he still keeps it challenging.

Erik Meijer is a computer scientist, programmer, software architect and leader of a cloud programmability team at Microsoft; and Professor of Cloud Programming at Delft Technical University. His accomplishments include major contributions to C#, the design of LINQ and Rx Reactive Extensions recently open sourced by Microsoft. His research at Microsoft has included work on Volta, CLR to JS; NoSql and democratizing for the cloud. Prior to Microsoft Erik has been an active researcher and developer in the Haskell community. Erik has been recognized twice by his peers at Microsoft as one of Microsoft s’ most valued and respected engineers.

Timan Rebel

Our other speaker Timan Rebel is the founder of the Snowsciety app. The Snowsciety app is an app which has been already named as the Social Tom Tom of the piste. It has won the prestigious price, the next web Award for best business to consumer application, even before the app had actually launched. The Snowsciety app is a social tracking app in which skiers and snowboarders can track their routes, locations and their performance.  With 45 million people in the European Union, US and Canada, where 50 percent has a smart phone, Timan has a very large market. A market that can’t be ignored. Timan Rebel will tell all about his app, how it started and discuss the technical background it has which he will be giving at our GOTO Night.

Timan Rebel is a serial entrepreneur, with eleven years of experience and a consultant at Rebelic. In 2001 Timan started with sugababes.nl, the first social network in the Netherlands, which grew out to be the largest social network for young people in the Netherlands. Which took the lead in the development of social network in the Netherlands. At Rebelic, Timan is an expert on social media and therefore he advises companies how to deal with social media and he is an advocate of the use of the techniques involved in Agile project management which he used for companies as Yamaha Motors, The Next Web and Techcrunch. With such a track record we are proud to have Timon as a speaker for our first GOTO Night at 12-12-12.

So join us and sign up for the GOTO Night at 12-12-12 with free beers and fingerfood thanks to our sponsor and host located in the center of Amsterdam, E-Buddy.

We hope to see you then!

Tech Meeting on November 1st will be all about iOS!

October 19th, 2012 by
(http://blog.trifork.com/2012/10/19/tech-meeting-on-november-1st-will-be-all-about-ios/)

Next tech meeting isn't about anything related to Java, but it is targeted towards Java developers. Together with my uncle Jos Jong I will first give you all a brief introduction to Objective C and iOS and compare it a little to Java. Also we will try to convince you that Objective C is a cool language worth looking into and playing around with! I will even give you a live coding demo of creating an app from scratch. Hopefully you will get inspired to start creating an app yourself!

After the pizza & beer break we will go into more detail about the iPhone app we developed together called Easy Calendar. This app was released in the first quarter of 2011. We will tell you all about how the app evolved into what it is today. We will cover the experiences we've had with developing, marketing and creating the graphical design for the app. Also, we will tell you about how we dealt with the bigger display which comes with the new iPhone 5.

If you're interested, you can sign up here (don't worry, it's free!): http://info.orange11.nl/Nov2012mobiletechmeeting.html Hopefully we'll see you all there!

Ysis Mobiel - an iPhone app in Healthcare

September 20th, 2012 by
(http://blog.trifork.com/2012/09/20/ysis-mobiel-an-iphone-app-in-healthcare/)

Hi! My name is Byron Voorbach. I am an intern at Orange11 as a software developer since february 2012. During my time at Orange11 I have been given the opportunity to work at some great applications. Ysis Mobiel for our client Gerimedica is one of those applications. Since I am fairly new to the company this will hopefully be my first (of many) blog posts.

Ysis Mobiel is an iPhone application for one of our customers in the Heathcare sector, GeriMedica. Please check out the case study to read more about the application and what it does.

The Mobile team at Orange11 have already developed a lot of pretty cool apps. Two of which I've been involved with from the sidelines are The New Motion & Learning to Write with Tracy. But with the Ysis Mobiel app, I was properly involved from day one, and I really gained insight as to how to integrate cool features such as:

  • providing security by logging in users with a simple pin code
  • give the users the ability to work without an active internet connection
  • figure out ways to optimise the user interaction within the application, trying to come up with a way to have users interact as quickly, easily and effectively as possible

But next to those challenges, I had a real drive to make the application a success, because first of all, it is part of a bigger project the Electronic Health Records (EHR) that Orange11 develops and on the other hand because as part of my studies I created something similar to this application, so could really relate back to its purpose. Anyway, the app is in the App Store and the feedback we have from GeriMedica to date from the first customer demos are really positive. I am already exciting about working on more mobile apps and I look forward to sharing more of my experiences on the Orange11 blog too. For now, you can read more about Ysis Mobiel in the Gerimedica / Ysis Mobiel case study on our website.

Mobile Apps; just part of the service!

new motion appWe mentioned in our last newsletter the launch of Learn to write with Tracy. Well since then we’ve been working on apps for many customers including for example The New Motion, a company dedicated to the use of Electric Vehicles. Orange11 has developed an iPhone app that allows users to view or search load locations (in list or map form) and even check real-time availability of these.

ysis screenAnother example is the app for GeriMedica;Ysis Mobiel, a mobile addition to their existing Electronic Health Record database used largely in Geriatric care (also an Orange11 project). The mobile app supports specific work processes allows registered users to document (in line with the strict regulations) all patient related interaction through a simple 3-step logging process. A registration overview screen also shows the latest activities registered, which prevents co-workers from accidentally registering the same activity twice.

Visit our website for more on our mobile expertise.

Digital assessments with the QTI delivery engine

May 23rd, 2012 by
(http://blog.trifork.com/2012/05/23/qti/)

For many of our customers in the Education domain we have spent a lot of time looking and exploring the impact of technology; in this particularly case especially with regards to digital assessments. Developing good digital assessment techniques is very important in order to measure and examine what students are actually learning.

We are proud and excited to share with you a short presentation on Digital assessments using the QTI delivery engine. This presentation will give you some insight on the capabilities of our Assessment Delivery Engine with use of the latest QTI standards. QTI is an Open Standard determined by the IMS Global organization and provides a solid basis to support interoperability for delivering assessments.

Just click here and you can experience an assessment for yourself. Our demo is a fun quiz all about The Netherlands using different questions types based on the QTI spec, some more advanced than others. The assessment engine will deliver these questions through any browser type, making it possible to assess on virtually any platform.

If you are not familiar with digital assessments with the use of the QTI delivery engine, here is a what we can offer:

  • Multi-platform assessments
  • Use in any existing Web Application
  • Customization and extension
  • High performance and scalable environments
  • Security and a robust solution

To discuss possibilities on how to tailor to your specific requirements and for more information just drop us a note. For now good luck with your assessment!

They have their first official social-tech event in May. They have some cool speakers too namely Trisha Gee presenting Disruptor and Peter Hilton who is going to set off in search of the perfect programmer. In between the sessions there ample opportunity to socialize and to taste some of Locus Publicus' excellent beer. If you wanna go register here.

Another QTI success story

Building further on our expertise of the QTI assessment delivery engine, we have implemented this engine for yet another customer; ThiemeMeulenhoff. The Oefenmodule is part of a new portal where Educational content is connected to an assessment engine that has the ability to conduct tests. This new module has been developed based on ThiemeMeulenhoff's existing DigiTrainer. Orange11 optimized the code and introduced new question types and introduced a feedback system that could prompt the use of tips or help. In a dashboard environment teachers can track progress, performance and results for individuals & groups of students. If you are interested in finding out more or a demo, then please contact us.

Caching for fun and profit

If you missed our last tech meeting the presentation is ready for download. It gives an overview of where & why caching matters in enterprise application architectures and then focuses on some practical applications and gotchas in Enterprise Java apps, like Hibernate's 2nd level cache and Spring 3.1's new caching abstraction. Here's the presentation.

Thanks for reading as always.

Creating a mobile version of your website with Spring Mobile and Sitemesh

May 3rd, 2012 by
(http://blog.trifork.com/2012/05/03/creating-a-mobile-version-of-your-website-with-spring-mobile-and-sitemesh/)

About a year ago I developed an Android app for my website, but as not everybody has an Android device I wanted to create a mobile version of my website. In the mobile version I want to present slightly different data to make it look more like the app. In this post I will show you how I have used Spring mobile to determine which version of the site the user wants to visit and how I used Sitemesh to select the correct decorator.

Learn to write with Tracy

April 26th, 2012 by
(http://blog.trifork.com/2012/04/26/learn-to-write-with-tracy-ipad-app/)

I am very proud to announce Orange11's first iPad application: Learn to write with Tracy (dutch: Leren Schrijven met Tracy) which has just been released world wide in both Dutch and English. I personally developed this app from scratch with the help of my colleague Dennis de Graaf for the graphical design work. I thought this would be a great opportunity to tell you a little bit what the app is all about and a sneak behind the scenes as to how it was made.
